When you look at the way George Bush and Tony Blair have been behaving in the last few years, it looks as if they’ve been living in a fantasy world. Surely this is the ultimate WoW world?
According to Blizzard, the owner of the popular online game, “ A reign of chaos, and a great tension now smoulders throughout the ravaged world of Azeroth” Could we not substitute the word Islam for Azeroth?
Is this what Blair and Bush, were really doing, playing in their fantasy world, with their massively multiplayer game. Were they following a World of Warcraft Quest? Have they been studying the World of Warcraft guides?
“As the battle-worn races begin to rebuild their shattered kingdoms, new threats, both ancient and ominous, arise to plague the world once again”. That’s how Blizzard, describe the aftermath of Warcraft lll. Sounds kind of familiar doesn’t it?
What about players forming friendships, alliances, and competing with enemies for power and glory? Does that ring a bell in the Blair, Bush saga? Have they tried to do what World of Warcraft claims to do, and left the real world behind to undertake grand quests and heroic exploits in a land of fantastic adventure? Are they busy trying to get to the highest World of Warcraft level?
The beauty, some say of WoW is that you can spend entire weeks at a time playing the game, providing dynamic events and flexible reward systems. The USA received massive contracts to rebuild Iraq, with many of these going to government officials and persons known to the president. 1000’s if not 1000,000’s of dollars are unaccounted for, or were spent rashly. How’s that for a flexible reward system? Is this the way to earn World of Warcraft money, in the form of World of Warcraft gold/
Then of course there’s role-playing, perhaps the real reason for World of Warcraft’s popularity. Tony Blair has just adopted a new persona in the Middle East, although throughout his premiership, he has adopted a new look and style for most of his public appearances. He is indeed, able to be “all things to all people”. Perhaps his most outrageous role is that of the religious, but alternative modern man. The Roman Catholic Church must certainly be in a dilemma over this one!
Perhaps, this search for glory is understandable in both these men, George W Bush, because he basks in the glory of his father, and because he became president by default. Tony Blair wishes to leave his “legacy” to the world. The war in Iraq is not what I imagine he had in mind, but it’s what the British public remember best.
Hopefully Gordon Brown, who is valiantly attempting to make his own mark on the U.K’s history, will not continue in the same vein. As a taciturn Scot, one cannot imagine him indulging in games of fantasy for whatever reason.
